Terms of Service

Last updated: October 27, 2026

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the CIL FinAid Portal (the "Portal") operated by Colón Izquierdo Law, LLC ("CIL," "we," "us"). By creating an account or otherwise using the Portal, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Portal.

1. Services

The Portal is the client communication and case-management interface for CIL's financial aid consulting services. Services are limited to financial aid consulting engaged for the purpose of assisting you in the completion of financial aid applications, including FAFSA, CSS Profile, IDOC, and similar financial aid forms. CIL services may also include analyzing tax documents to estimate the Student Aid Index (SAI), calculating Pell Grant eligibility, assisting with appeal letters, and providing strategic recommendations.

CIL does not prepare or submit college admissions applications. You remain responsible for finalizing and submitting your own financial aid applications.

The Portal does not establish an attorney-client relationship for legal representation. CIL provides financial aid consulting only. Legal advice on matters unrelated to financial aid is governed by a separate engagement letter and is not provided through the Portal.

Not financial planning or investment advice. The financial aid consulting services provided are not financial planning services, investment advice, or financial services regulated under federal or state financial laws. All guidance, projections, and recommendations offered during consultations are intended solely for informational and illustrative purposes, designed to help clients understand and visualize potential outcomes of financial aid applications such as FAFSA, CSS Profile, and institutional aid forms.

The analysis presented is based on information provided by the client and publicly available methodologies, and does not constitute personalized financial or investment advice. Clients are encouraged to consult with a certified financial planner or tax advisor before making any financial decisions based on the information provided during these consultations.

2. Accounts

To use the Portal you must register an account or be added by CIL staff. You agree to provide accurate information, keep your credentials confidential, and notify us promptly of any unauthorized use. You are responsible for all activity under your account. CIL may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.

3. Engagement and Fees

When you select a service through the Portal, you are presented with a service agreement specifying the scope, fee, and payment terms. Engagement begins when you electronically sign the agreement. The signed agreement, including the timestamp, IP address, and signature record, is enforceable under the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (E-SIGN, 15 U.S.C. § 7001 et seq.) and the Puerto Rico Electronic Transactions Act.

A 50% deposit is generally due upon signing, with the remainder due upon completion of the service unless otherwise agreed. Fees are non-refundable once work has begun, except as required by law.

4. Your Responsibilities & Accuracy of Information

CIL relies solely on the information you provide.CIL's analysis, projections, and recommendations are based exclusively on the data, documents, and disclosures supplied by you. Omitted financial information, erroneous tax return data, undisclosed income, incorrect asset disclosures, or any other inaccurate or incomplete information may result in inaccurate consulting analysis, mis-calculated SAI estimates, incorrect Pell Grant projections, and downstream errors on financial aid applications.

You are responsible for providing complete, accurate, and truthful information so the consulting services can be as accurate as possible. CIL has no independent obligation to investigate or verify the accuracy of information provided to us, and we are not liable for analyses or recommendations that are based on inaccurate or incomplete client-provided information.

Submitting false or misleading information on federal financial aid applications may constitute a federal felony and may carry substantial fines and imprisonment under federal and state law. State and Puerto Rico tax-fraud statutes may also apply.

You agree to:

  • Provide complete and accurate information for use in financial aid applications, and promptly correct any prior submissions if errors are discovered;
  • Upload requested documents in a timely manner and respond to information requests promptly;
  • Review and approve applications before they are submitted to FAFSA, the College Board, or schools;
  • Pay invoices when due.

5. SMS Communication

By providing your phone number, you consent to receive SMS messages from CIL regarding your case (case updates, document requests, deadline reminders, invoices, replies to your inquiries). Message frequency varies. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to unsubscribe; HELP for help. Opt-out applies only to SMS — you may continue to receive email and Portal communications.

6. AI-Assisted Features

Some features of the Portal use artificial intelligence to extract data from uploaded tax documents and to assist with conversations with our SMS bot. AI-generated content (such as extracted tax figures or suggested replies) is reviewed by CIL staff before relied upon for application submissions. AI features are tools that assist our consultants and do not replace professional review.

7. No Guarantee of Outcome

CIL does not guarantee any specific financial aid award, admissions decision, or other outcome. Estimates of SAI, Pell Grant eligibility, and college net price are based on publicly available formulas and the data you provide; actual aid awards are determined by individual schools and the federal government and may vary.

8. Account Credentials Vault

As a courtesy, the Portal lets you store account credentials (FAFSA FSA IDs, CSS Profile / CollegeBoard logins, college portal logins, and similar) so CIL staff can complete and check the status of your applications. Sensitive fields are encrypted at rest using AES-256-GCM with the encryption key stored separately from the database. Every access (creation, edit, reveal, deletion) is logged and visible to you on your Logins page.

The credential vault is a convenience, not a password manager. You should not rely on CIL as your sole record of these credentials and you remain responsible for keeping your own copies. CIL does not guarantee the availability or recoverability of stored credentials and is not liable for any consequences arising from credentials being lost, deleted, or otherwise inaccessible.

You authorize CIL staff to use stored credentials solely to perform the services you have engaged us for. You may delete any stored credential at any time from the Portal.

9. Confidentiality

CIL maintains the confidentiality of all client information, including financial records, tax returns, and Social Security Numbers. We disclose information only as needed to provide services (e.g., to FAFSA, CSS Profile, IDOC, and applicant schools) or as required by law. See our Privacy Policy for details.

10. Intellectual Property

The Portal, including its design, code, content, logos (including the Colón Izquierdo Law mark and the xhiBit signing brand), and the strategic methodology used in SAI analysis and recommendations, is the property of Colón Izquierdo Law, LLC and is protected by U.S. and international copyright, trademark, and trade-secret laws. You receive a limited, non-transferable license to use the Portal solely for your engagement with CIL.

11. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, CIL's total liability for any claim arising out of or relating to the Portal or services is limited to the fees paid by you for the specific service giving rise to the claim. CIL is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages.

These limitations do not apply to liability that cannot be limited by law (e.g., professional malpractice claims governed by applicable professional rules).

12. Termination

You may stop using the Portal at any time. CIL may terminate your access if you violate these Terms, fail to pay invoices, or for any other reason in our sole discretion. Termination does not relieve you of obligations to pay fees earned. Records may be retained as described in our Privacy Policy.

13. Governing Law and Disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute arising from these Terms or the Portal shall be brought in the courts of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and you consent to that jurisdiction.

14. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be communicated through the Portal or by email. Continued use after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.
